About LUVANE

The story of LUVANE
in a few lines

Born in the countryside of the Netherlands, LUVANE started exploring the visual arts at an early age. Inspired by artists like Hergé (Tin Tin), Morris (Lucky Luke) and Marten Toonder (Tom Poes), LUVANE - pseudonym voor Luuk van Ewijk - learned to draw and write comics incorporating elements of politics, history and his own imagination. Whether it was for the school paper in elementary, or to get through the long summers, there was always an urge to imagine and create new things using pencils and paper.

During high school progress in the visual arts was hampered a bit by an increasing interest in playing and writing music, and exercising various sports. Still, after graduation LUVANE decided to pursue a degree in product design, hoping to use and develop drawing and design skills through academic education. Deviating from the graphic arts again, in 2014 he completed a minor at the Conservatory in Enschede, but in 2017 he graduated with a masters degree in Industrial Design Engineering.

As a student, LUVANE took on his first job as cartoonist for the independent newspaper of the University of Twente, and later for its platform for public lectures. Besides this work, he drew for many different clients while giving workshops and lectures about the cartooning. In recent years, LUVANE took on assignments for animation and theme music, and got the opportunity to create multiple public artworks for the city of Enschede and the University of Twente.

Today, LUVANE combines his work as visual artist with teaching in various research and design related disciplines at the University of Twente (Enschede) and the Vrije Universiteit (Amsterdam). Collaborations with scientists have contributed to a growing expertise in the field of science communication, while working with people from many different backgrounds has helped to develop a skill that every cartoonist literally and figuratively needs: the ability to put things into perspective.
