The start of a journey

The travelling exhibition LUVANE’s Advertising Art, featuring works created for the promotion of public events at the University of Twente, will take off in Enschede on 9 February. A small selection of the more than 200 illustrations, originally used for advertising via programme booklets, digital billboards and social media, will grace the walls of the two floors of Stanislaus Brewskovitch. This beautiful city brewery and bar is located in what used to be a church in the centre of Enschede, the Dutch city that is also home to the University of Twente.

Artificial communication

The event illustrations on display only exist because the organizers of public events showed confidence in the ideas and graphic skills of a cartoonist. With the rise of generative AI cheap and quick alternatives have become available. We need to ask ourselves though, to which extent do we want AI-generated text and images to represent us when communicating? And will we lose our ability to properly communicate if we allow AI to fill in for us? Through this exhibition, LUVANE hopes to inspire others to lend their graphic skills and ingenuity for advertising, and to encourage organizations and individuals to make use of those services.

‘Will we lose our ability to properly communicate if we allow AI to fill in for us?’

Certificate of authenticity

Another issue that emanates from the rise of generative AI is that of the questionable authenticity of graphic works. To distinguish human generated work from AI-generated work, the skill of storytelling might become essential for visual artists in the future: How did a work come about? Who’s the artist behind it, and what do they stand for? To get a taste of what this future might look like, all exhibited works will be accompanied by a label that allows the visitor to scan a QR code and watch a video. In such a YouTube short (uploaded to the new channel), LUVANE explains the illustration in a few sentences while clips of each phase of the drawing process are shown.
