The dim old days

For those (former) students and staff members of the University of Twente that are longing back to the days when dim Monday’s were lit up somewhat by the Campus Cartoons published in University of Twente’s independent newspaper U-Today, there’s good news: A selection of Campus Cartoons drawn between 2017 and 2023 graces the pages of the new birthday calendar ‘LUVANE’s Campus Cartoons’! The calendar comes in various formats and is available worldwide in the online shop.

This one… or this one!

With close to a hundred Campus Cartoons published by U-Today, how does one select just twelve for this calendar? After narrowing down the selection to cartoons that feature recognizable campus locations, and filtering out the ones with a lot of text in it, it became easier to choose. Remove the cartoons that require too much context to still be easily understood, and the job is done! To make sure that the cartoons can be understood by everyone though, a short caption is provided below each month’s cartoon.

‘All in all, the cartoons about the campus’ architecture seem to stand the test of time best.’

The test of time

The selection procedure for this calendar of course raised the question: which were the strongest cartoons among the lot? The ones commenting on the architecture of the campus, the ones in which LUVANE takes aim at higher management and other temporary enemies, or maybe the ones celebrating the excesses of student life? All in all, the cartoons about the campus’ architecture seem to stand the test of time best. Many of the other cartoons worked well because they commented on something relevant at that time, but now their appeal has worn off a bit. Will Wim T. Schipper’s Torentje van Drienerlo be there until the end of time? Then we have a winner.
